In Mourning is a 5-piece band coming from Sweden who are known for their melodic but powerful sound, and their unique feature of three guitars. Four years have passed since the release of their third LP ”The Weight of Oceans”, the longest period in the band’s career without releasing any new music, and two years after the exit of founding member and drummer Christian Netzell, In Mourning recorded a new full-length called ”Afterglow” along with former -Katatonia drummer Daniel Liljekvist.
The first track is called ”Fire and Ocean”, a destructive song not only in the lyrics but as whole (remembering this band is a melodic act). After this comes ”The Grinning Mist”, an almost 10 minutes song that starts with a simple intro (kinda tribal!). In this song you hear more of the progressive side of In Mourning and the first hearing of clean vocals. The third track is ”Ashen Crown”, that begins very brutally and it ends with simple and melodic riffs. Next is ”Below Rise to the Above” that continues the flow of the album.
The fifth song is probably the heaviest song of the album next to ”Fire and Ocean”. This one is called ”Lighthouse Keeper” and tells us a nice and very well written story about the struggle of an ocean’s man. Finally the album ends a beautiful song entitled ”The Call to Orion”, a good ending to a good album.
This album drives you into the depts of your thoughts and will make you feel gloomy and melancolic. In its whole is a record that will surely appeal all melodic death fans out there.
