The Swedish death metal band The Lurking Fear has officially announced its dissolution following the death of vocalist Tomas “Tompa” Lindberg, who passed away on September 16, 2025. The news was confirmed by the group in a statement released on September 18, marking the end of a project that had become a distinctive voice within the country’s extreme metal scene.
In their announcement, the band paid tribute to Lindberg in deeply personal terms:
“It is with heavy hearts that we must inform you that the great one, the master of the twisted tales and morbidity, has departed from our world. His journey into nothingness fills our hearts with despair and sorrow. Tomas Lindberg left us in solitude on the morning of September 16. The greatness of his spirit cannot be mentioned too many times. With this said: The Lurking Fear is no more! Rest in power old friend! You are to be forever remembered!”
A Band Shaped by Darkness
Formed in 2016, The Lurking Fear drew inspiration from the works of H.P. Lovecraft and quickly distinguished themselves with a raw and uncompromising sound. Their debut album, Out of the Voiceless Grave (2017), established their vision of horror-infused death metal, followed by Death, Madness, Horror, Decay (2021), which expanded on their bleak and aggressive aesthetic.
Although active for less than a decade, the band earned respect for their uncompromising artistic approach, merging traditional Swedish death metal with themes of cosmic dread and existential horror.
Lindberg’s Enduring Legacy
Tomas Lindberg was best known as the frontman of At The Gates, one of the most influential acts in melodic death metal. His unmistakable vocal style and uncompromising stage presence helped define the genre, particularly through the landmark 1995 album Slaughter of the Soul. Beyond At The Gates and The Lurking Fear, Lindberg also contributed to projects such as Disfear, Skitsystem, The Crown, and Lock Up, leaving behind a prolific and versatile body of work.
The decision to bring The Lurking Fear to an end reflects the irreplaceable role Lindberg played in the group. Without him, the band’s creative essence could not continue.
As the metal community mourns his passing, Lindberg’s influence endures through his recordings, his performances, and the countless artists inspired by his voice.
“Can you hear the funeral hymn? An ageless terror mad. In blind delirium, waiting for the living dead to ascend.” — The Lurking Fear, 2025
