AMORPHIS – Queen of Time

It has been almost 3 years since the last original release from the Finnish metal masters Amorphis came out. Now, with their new record, the listener will soon hear that it was well worth the wait. Their new album, called “Queen of Time”, it’s so full of details, and it’s so much more than just great riffs, and enjoyable lyrics.

“Queen of Time” took a symphonic and epic direction, with the keyboard layers and melodies taking over the songs, but never by any chance, shadowing the true feeling of the tunes. Despite of that, the essence of everything this band has done in the past stands intact in this release, but the formula continues to evolve, as Amorphis had no fear of take in new elements. We can listen to those in songs like “The Bee”, “Message in the Amber”, “The Golden Elk”, “Wrong Direction”, “Heart of the Giant”, and “We Accursed”.

This Amorphis new opus balances in between the heavyness of its guitars, and the layers of keyboard melodies, that had so much deep to this songs. Anneke van Giersbergen has a special appearance in the song “Amongst Stars”, one of the best of the record, placed almost in the end of this long journey into Finnish myths and tales. It’s an album that like so many others of this historic band, needs time to grow with the listener, since there’s so much detail in the melodies to find out. There are also soft folk melodic lines, so characteristic of this band, filling the empty spaces of the songs.

Recorded once again with the producer Jens Bogren, at Fascination Street Studios in Sweden, this new work ends with “Pyres on the Coast”, and concludes an always pleasing journey that Amorphis give to the listener, each time they put something out.
