“The Immortal Wars” marks the return of the favorite metal’s roman son, Ex Deo. This side project of Maurizio Iacono (Kataclysm) shook the foundations of the fans that like a mixture of heavy metal, epic melodies and explore history in lyrics. This album keeps the elements that became tradition in the previous releases and will transport the listener to a roman legion in the crusades time.
Following the previous sound production, the listener will immediately relate to Ex Deo. The same line of work was undertaken, with Ardek’s orchestrations filling the empty spaces Jean-François Dagenais and Stéphane Barbewhere guitars can’t reach.
The songs are very well written and structured, being the best examples of this fact “The Rise of Hannibal”, “Hispania (The Siege of Saguntum)”, “Crossing of the Alps”, “Cato Major: Carthago Delenda Est!”, and “The Roman”. Based in what can be considered not only one of the hardest periods in history but also one of the most inspiring in terms of brotherhood and values. Maurizio Iacono gives more than voice to this record, as the listener will notice he is the spirit and strength behind this new epic travelling.
Being a very organic listening from start to end, still lacks a great song or big momentum like in their first release. Nonetheless, it’s a recommend album from a band we definitely don’t want to go away or stay in the shadows for a long period. This record also shows that Ex-Deo have conquered a space of their own.
