Amalie Brunn’s project Myrkur took another turn in the wheel of darkness around the old north, and present this time the 3rd release in 3 years. It’s a live record in the Emanuel Vigeland Mausoleum, Oslo, with the Norwegian Girls Choir. What the listener can find here are beautiful and dramatic acoustic versions of previous 7 songs recorded in “M”, and 2 new songs: a vocal cover of Bathory’s “Song to Hall Up High”, and “Den Lille Piges Død”.

We can hear that this record puts aside the black metal grim guitars, and focus on the cold ambient vocals side of it, converting dark melodies into something enchanting, bringing up the influences of old northern European folk, that Myrkur always had, combined with a crystal clear lyric voice. “Jegerguden, I ertjenerne”, “Skøgenskulledø” with 11 seconds of violin reverb, “Byssan lull”, the melancholic feeling of eternity of “Frosnevind”, and “Onde Børn” are the highest references of this vocals exercise, but the highest peak of the live record is the vocal cover of Bathory’s “Song to Hall Up High”, something that Amalie refers always as a great influence.

This 27 minutes live recording ends with “Dybtiskoven”. If the listener knows the band, this will be something exotic to discover, and save to be played during the most long winter nights. If not, might not be the best presentation, as this record won’t change the most skeptical of the opinions about this project, and seem more like a candy for the fans that support a band that has no boundaries, and luckily, has people who listen to this project with an open mind.
