Sólstafir is not a strange name in the Rock / Metal world, it’s an Icelandic band that has been increasingly conquering fans. With a 25 years career, they started as a black metal band and with their second album ” Masterpiece of Bitterness ” (2005) they developed a more post-rock/post-metal approach.

Endless Twilight of Codependent Love was released on the 6th of November 2020, and it is the post-metal band’s seventh album. Sólstafir’s music is known for its melancholic atmosphere and for portraying mental health related themes – ETCL it’s no exception. However, it appears, even if for brief moments, that a little of the original vibe of Sólstafir is back. In songs like “Akkeri” (first song) and “Dionysus” (fifth song) you can notice as typical black metal riffs emerge. In the song “Dionysus” you can also witness the vocalist Aðalbjörn’s potent gutturals.

This album definitely showcases the various facets of the Icelandic group. “Drýsil”, which in Icelandic means demons, it’s the best song on the album. It is comprised by calmer riffs – sometimes reminding Pink Floyd – that portray a dark theme enclosed in the song tranquility: Depression. Throughout the album there is a certain contrast between tranquility and uneasiness, calm sounds are interrupted by faster and more aggressive sounds – a perfect representation of our current mental state when anxiety and inopportune thoughts attack us unexpectedly.

Endless Twilight of Codependent Love, as previously mentioned, brings together the various phases and musical styles of the Icelandic band in a single album without sacrificing the essence of Sólstafir music. This makes it a great album for people with eclectic musical taste and it is, so far, undoubtedly the best album of the band.
